Fung Term Professorship in Accounting
Professor Mingyi Hung
Head and Chair Professor, Department of Accounting
Chair Professor,HKUST Institute for Emerging Market Studies

Since the first catalytic days of her PhD at MIT, Prof Mingyi Hung has been fascinated by the effect of institutions on financial reporting and capital market development in global markets. This passion has led to her impressive body of research on the information and monitoring roles of accounting in international capital markets and how country-specific institutional factors interact with accounting information.

The information content of earnings announcements worldwide. The influence of investor protection on the association of performance measures with CEO turnover. Board reforms and how they affect firm value in different countries. Mandatory adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards and its impact on IPOs in global capital markets; and on post-earnings announcement drift and the trading strategies built around such drift. All have been part of her purview.

She sees international investigation as important to avoid generalizing a single-country study into a one-size-fits-all worldview. It is a research focus that reflects the distinctive background she brings to her field, with a bachelor degree in management science from Taiwan’s National Chiao Tung University prior to her doctorate.

Like the global markets she studies, Prof. Hung’s innovative insights have worldwide exposure, with numerous articles in prestigious academic journals, including the Journal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Accounting Research, and Review of Financial Studies, along with various international honors and awards. As a further recognition and professional service, she has been an editor of The Accounting Review, the flagship journal of the American Accounting Association, and currently serves on the editorial boards of several leading journals, including the Journal of International Business Studies.

She is keen to stimulate interest in the contributions that her area of study can make beyond academia. Media coverage in influential outlets, including The Economist and Financial Times, are indications that her work is achieving this aim. She is also affiliated with the HKUST Institute for Emerging Market Studies, which seeks to explore challenges and opportunities facing businesses and policy-makers in such countries.

As an educator, Prof. Hung’s great intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm for international research is readily transmitted through her effective teaching and mentoring of students. She is a winner of multiple teaching awards in the US and Hong Kong, and enjoys seeing her PhD students develop into world-class scholars in their own right.
